The exterior surface is lustrous with crystals of chalcopyrite. The sphalerite has formed a layer over the original mineral formation, calcite. On the bottom view, one can see that the white calcite still partially remains while the remainder has dissolved over time and leaves the formation partially hollow. Closer examination shows a secondary growth of calcite over the original sphalerite cast followed by a further deposit of sphalerite, much like seeing a series of ‘phantoms’ in a quartz crystal.
